Remote Interactive Coaching Activities

A Remote Interactive Coaching works as follows:

• Trainees work in small groups. They may be co-located or based in different locations. A typical group size is 4+/-2.
  
• Roles are assigned to each member of the group. They each receive instructions, and these may vary according to the role.
  
• The group agrees a schedule for the work. Some of it is done independently and some by remote interaction with the trainer.
  

• The group does the independent work, which typically takes 1-2 hours.
  
• For activities related to client contact - e.g. meetings, telemeetings, presentations, demos - the format is typically a role-play or a live presentation.
  
• For operational activities, such as professional writing or some kind of situation analysis, the format might be a case study, for example.
  
• The content of the activities is based on the daily work of participants wherever possible.
  

• There is then a short period of email interaction with the trainer, followed by a 1-2 hour remote debrief (e.g: Using Webex or Skype). Exact times depend on the activity.
  
• Feedback is exchanged. This consists of appreciation, encouragement and constructive suggestions for future improvements, from trainer to trainees and vice versa.
  

Why Remote Interactive matters

The challenges associated with classroom-based training and eLearning are well known. Hence, most companies opt for a blended training solution that combines the virtues of both while attempting to minimise the drawbacks associated with each.

However, while the eLearning part of a blended solution puts trainees in a position of independence, the successful completion of a programme is highly dependent on their motivation and availability.

Competing for attention with other tasks, eLearning exercises are often done superficially, and busy people tend not to complete the programmes at all.

Remote Interactive Coaching is a complement to classroom-based training and eLearning that greatly increases the value and the completion rates of blended training programmes.
