PAGE: Active versus Reactive

As well as exploiting PAGE for actively driving encounters, I can also use it in reactive mode, turning it into a defensive weapon. By this, I mean for situations where someone else has taken the lead of the encounter.

In such situations, my familiarity with the Encounter Process and the PAGE tool helps me to quickly spot when the main part of a meeting has started without an adequate transition from the Engage to the Do steps. I can then try to get things back on track with a specific request. For example, ‘Would you mind if we worked out an agenda before getting any further into this discussion ... ?’ or, even simpler, ‘Could we check how much time everyone has available before we go any further?’

In other words, I can use PAGE actively (I drive) or reactively (I am a passenger, but I have a safe way to talk to the driver).
