PAGE: Short Meetings and Calls

For minor encounters – meetings and telephone calls arranged at short notice, for example – I use MAP and PAGE to get my thoughts straight just before the event. This takes only a few minutes. I might have partial information on the checklist points – from email, for example – and I complete the rest as best I can.

The benefit of doing this modest preparation is that it helps me to make the mental switch to the people and business of the encounter. I therefore arrive well prepared, given the circumstances, and even in a position to take the lead, if necessary.

As noted in The Encounter Process, there are essentially two parts to the Engage step: an initial ‘greeting’ part, where participants get in sync, and a ‘transition’ part that gets the main work of the encounter started. Even if there was no time to do the PAGE preparation before the meeting, it is still possible to use it for the transition, on the fly. For example, the absolute minimum, Agenda is the amount of time available. It takes only a few seconds to check this. Similarly, it should not take long to agree on the Purpose and Goals, and if it does, then surely it is important to take that time!
